Helpful & Fragrant Fennel

Fennel leaves, fennel seed and the bulbous swollen vegetable type are all medicinally useful. Fennel leaves and seeds are essentially a phenomenal aid for digestion by promoting the secretion of digestive juices and will also ease inflammation and wind (and colic in babies). It is also a premier anti-oxidant containing quercetin and kaempferol which are potent preventers of cell degeneration and ageing. Another plus is fennel seeds ability to bind to bile salts and decrease the reabsorption of cholesterol, done via its ‘fibres’.

Finally, it is a phyto-oestrogen, ideal for post-menopause women. It makes a good smoothie addition. Try ½ a teaspoon of seed a few times a week.

The stunning elder-flowers are delicious in drinks and food and perfect for cooling the body down and helping with inflammation. And likewise, the late summer berries are also super anti-inflammatory. Additionally, both the flowers and berries are a good source of hemagglutinin protein, which helps reduce viral replication and inhibit a virus from penetrating the walls of your cells (especially the berries) Elderflowers or berries are useful taken preventatively as they can stabilize and increase your immune system’s resistance to infection. And not just viral attacks, but bacterial as well. So, elders ability to ‘modulate’ inflammatory responses is of key importance here. When the body reacts to ‘immune invasion’, inflammation is the result. To explain further, a little inflammation is good and protective but excesses of it are bad news. Elder (berry or flowers) will boost healthy cytokine levels as part of immune protection but not allow excessive cytokine production, thus keeping excessive inflammation to a minimum. Indeed, both elderflower and elderberry inhibit the production of nitric oxide, a real winner for all inflammatory diseases. This is because nitric oxide is a ‘signal’ to trigger inflammation and so by slowing this response down, excessive pain and swelling can decrease. So go and collect elderflowers and make non-sugary drinks (sweeten with a tiny amount of maple syrup if needed) and otherwise, pop into salads and smoothies and make fresh hot or cold teas.

Recipe for Coconut & Pineapple (Pina Colada) Green Smoothie:
1 tablespoon of Superfood Plus powder.
Coconut water (sugar free) - around 200-300ml.
1 cup of pineapple chunks.

The Value of Valerian

The first leaves of my valerian plants are well up and my cat has as usual taken to chewing these and rolling on them to expose the strong-smelling roots which have a calming effect.

Valerian Root & What We Know

• Extensive German research has confirmed its use for aiding insomnia, poor sleep and the quality of sleep. It also helps reduce blood pressure.

• It’s the valepotriate compounds that induce sleep and otherwise its valerianic acid. These constituents and many others have primary CNS (central nervous system) depressant activities plus the ability to sedate neurotransmitters.

• Valerian helps a wide range of stress-related disorders especially those who find it hard to ‘switch off’ due to nervous excitability and lack of calm generally. However, for some, they may find it sedating and therefore it is best used at night when you are at home.

• For those with anxiety and insomnia, including panic attacks, palpitations, and sweating, Valerian will dampen these reactions and reduce not only physical but mental over-alertness.

• It also reduces muscle tension and helps lower tension in the neck, shoulders, back and irritable bowel and so on.

So all good stuff but not for long-term use (1-3 months at a time only). For 5% of the population, it can almost have the opposite effect. So beware! Some people can become very wakeful and have vivid or frightening dreams. I often say a blend of passionflower (Passiflora) and ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is just as good. Or passionflower on its own with its ability to use it long-term.
