Serenoa serrulata

by Jill Rosemary Davies

Native to North America, Saw Palmetto berries have become the ‘prostate enlargement’ plant worldwide, as it helps to reduce prostate swelling.  It also strengthens and regulates both male and female reproductive and urinary systems.  Lesser known, is that it is very useful for colds, the lungs, and asthma by working as an expectorant.  Equally it will help to tone the digestion, increasing appetite and relieving fatigue, in fact it makes a brilliant post-illness remedy.  Jill explains, and there are lovely photos, that the ‘saw’ part of the name comes from the huge jagged leaves which are ‘palm-like.’  Recipes, how to use with other herbs that it can be combined with, all combine to make it a useful read.
