Chickweed, The `Star` Plant

A ‘star’ plant, its lovely white flowers are star-shaped!

Chickweed (Stellaria media) is that ‘oh so common’ sprawling annual ‘weed’ that is everywhere by now. It’s hugely rich in chlorophyll as seen in its bright green leaves. Aside from this, it is rich in many vitamins and minerals and used specifically as a kidney and liver tonic, to treat skin problems. It also has wonderful anti-inflammatory and pain reliever qualities.

Why not gather this abundant plant (away from pollutants) and make a tea or add it to smoothies or make a pesto?

For the tea:- 2 tablespoons fresh leaves. Steep 10-15 minutes.

Chickweed Pesto made in a blender
2 handfuls of green leaves and flowers, chopped.
2 cloves garlic bulbs.
Enough olive oil to make the blades turn.
½ or more handful of pine nuts.
Blend and use with everything!

Strikingly attractive silver birch (Betula pendula) with its black and white bark, their leaves are incredibly medicinal. So common to gardens, woodlands and parks.

Rich in betulin and betulinol, these leaves are highly anti-bacterial and very useful for cystitis. They are also good at removing excess water, (maybe connected to blood pressure)or the menstrual cycle. They do this without irritating the kidneys, very important.

In Europe, they have always been used as a slimming aid. They also help arthritis as they are anti-inflammatory and reduce uric acid levels. Many digestive system issues are balanced with these leaves as well.

Caution: Due to salicylates in leaves, those sensitive to aspirin and salicylates or using blood thinning medication should not take it.
