Slippery, Soothing, Gut Healers

Those with diarrhoea, irritable bowel, colitis, painful gastritis or any of the other many and varied gut and bowel disorders which need gentle treatment. This is where herbs come in. They will line the gut and bowel and protect the delicate mucous membranes to speed up healing. Herbs that will help are marshmallow, marigold and other demulcents and tissue healers. These herbs will dually encourage positive local immune responses and cell regeneration and they ‘stick’ to the stomach/intestinal walls keeping them safe and giving them time to restore themselves. Equally, these kinds of herbs will feed and nourish, so in extreme cases, a few days on these will speed up the healing process of an acute crisis. Marshmallow root also induces ‘phagocytosis;’ a process whereby certain cells engulf bacteria and dead cells.

To this regime also avoid acidic foods like sugar, coffee, and alcohol, but also wheat dairy and other known allergens, as they can inflict more pain and delay recovery. (Use pureed foods for a while and smoothies and reduce abrasive fibre intake. It will encourage the gut to produce less stomach acid and allow healing more quickly.)
