Stiff Joints can be helped with Herbs
Stiff and painful joints need circulatory herbs on a daily basis, year-round, no matter what their cause or specific issue. A favourite choice for those growing, it can be rosemary for its year-round foliage. Whilst other kitchen choices are black pepper, turmeric, cinnamon or ginger. Meadowsweet flowering herb (Filipendula ulmaria) is highly effective at reducing painful acidic buildups in the body. Their salicylate component provides anti-inflammatory support and thus brings some pain relief. Additionally, meadowsweet is a renowned tonic, acting as a powerful digestive stimulant by clearing and easing the stomach, always useful but also vital for further keeping down inflammatory levels, especially if unknown food allergies are additionally causing problems.

Goosegrass for Lymph Help

Gallium aparine or Goosegrass is an invaluable spring cleanser, generalised detoxifier and lymph cleanser. It`s free for the picking right now and it`s sticky (velcro) leaves can be collected in handfuls. You then crudely chop them and pour over boiling water to make a tea. Leave 20 minutes and drink.

Alternatively, pop into a green smoothie.

Spring Hawthorn for Help for the Heart

We used these young leaves together with its May-time blossom alongside autumn berries, to make a 3 blend tincture concentrate.

Ginger, Fennel & Peppermint Dr. Schulze Style

Dr Schulze Superfood Plus is one of many products that Dr Schulze makes. One of his other products can be made at home which we will call a digestive/brain tonic. It does boost your energy levels.

Homemade Herbal Tea
2 tablespoons of freshly grated ginger root.
2 tablespoons of fresh or 1 tablespoon of dried peppermint leaves (or two tea bags).
2 teaspoons of fennel seeds.

Pour 500ml of boiling water onto the above and leave for 15 minutes to 1 hour then drink.

Why Peppermint Energises
Dr Schulze (Herbalist and Natural Healer) particularly loves peppermint and as he points out it’s a natural ‘energiser’ both mentally and physically as its strong smell stimulates our senses, focussing our thoughts and brain, helping with clarity. Cold Weather with Olive & Chilli- This will Really Warm you up!

Chillies can be put with olive oil and liquidized and stored in the fridge for easy additions to all kinds of dishes, spread on bread etc and they make an instant warming addition.

Cayenne & Chilli
In Mexico, cayenne or chilli is so popular they put it in ice cream and chocolate, but more generally it is added to savoury dishes. The degree of ‘hotness’ is usually down to the species used from ‘paprika’ (Hungarian pepper) which is the mildest (Bell peppers commonly found in the supermarket being the mildest of all and used as a vegetable) to cayenne pepper (Capsicum annum) to the very hot ones like ‘African birdseye’ (Capsicum frutescens) and the very hottest ‘scotch bonnet’ and ‘habanero’ (Capsicum Chinese).

So if great heat is unpalatable or irritating then cayenne pepper or paprika will be gentler choices as opposed to the hotter chillies.

Olive Leaf & Olive Oil are both Therapeutic for Circulation
And perhaps surprisingly olive leaves are also helpful in cold weather as they will help keep a healthy blood flow to our extremities. The European Journal of Nutrition reports that research on olive leaf extract may help reduce cardiovascular risk factors and this is partly due to its antioxidant properties helping to prevent the formulation of clots (by aiding the ‘normalisation’ of platelet agitation). So olive leaves can play their part during winter and are good potentially combined with ‘heating’ herbs.
