Those with diarrhoea, irritable bowel, colitis, painful gastritis or any of the other many and varied gut and bowel disorders which need gentle treatment. This is where herbs come in. They will line the gut and bowel and protect the delicate mucous membranes to speed up healing. Herbs that will help are marshmallow, marigold and other demulcents and tissue healers. These herbs will dually encourage positive local immune responses and cell regeneration and they ‘stick’ to the stomach/intestinal walls keeping them safe and giving them time to restore themselves. Equally, these kinds of herbs will feed and nourish, so in extreme cases, a few days on these will speed up the healing process of an acute crisis. Marshmallow root also induces ‘phagocytosis;’ a process whereby certain cells engulf bacteria and dead cells.

To this regime also avoid acidic foods like sugar, coffee, and alcohol, but also wheat dairy and other known allergens, as they can inflict more pain and delay recovery. (Use pureed foods for a while and smoothies and reduce abrasive fibre intake. It will encourage the gut to produce less stomach acid and allow healing more quickly.)

Milk thistle seeds protect the liver by ensuring the smooth functioning of its many metabolic activities. This includes helping address ‘hangovers’ or excesses of alcohol. For women, alcohol metabolism can be much harder as we, unfortunately, possess fewer enzymes to metabolise alcohol compared to men. Equally, as we all age our ability to metabolize becomes less adept.

Herbalists tend to blend milk thistle with ‘bitter herbs’ like dandelion root and leaf, wormwood and gentian because these additions ensure good gut preparation and thorough processing. These blended herbs can be taken before a meal and will prime and prepare the digestive processes whereas if taken after a meal they will help process and digest.

When drinking alcohol include a large ratio of water alongside. Alcohol is a diuretic which means it will automatically remove water from the body in order for the alcohol to be absorbed; so this automatic dehydration should be contended with as you go along but if not, at the end of the evening before you go to bed drink plenty of water. A Potted History of Ginkgo

The leaves (and nuts) of ginkgo have been safely used as medicine and food for several thousands of years. The wealth of empirical knowledge about this amazing tree is reassuring regarding its safety and efficacy when used in normal daily doses and should encourage us to grow and use it more frequently.

Notably the oldest living species of the tree, ginkgo was described by Charles Darwin as a ‘living fossil,’ because it has evolved over 200 million years, from the same period in fact that the first birds appeared and dinosaurs reached their optimum size. Cone-bearing trees were plentiful, and pines and conifers remain more closely related to gingko than other deciduous trees. Ginkgo leaves were used to retrieve and strengthen memory abilities as early as 2800 BCE.

The name “ginkgo” comes from the Chinese word yinhsing, which describes the tree’s fruit and means “silver apricot”. The “biloba” part of the name describes the leaves, which frequently have two lobes and a heart-shaped appearance.

Records show that its thorns could pierce and drain an abscess and were boiled in drinks to help reduce swelling.

The tree has a phenomenal record of resistance to insects, pollution, and parasitic invasion. Ginkgo’s resilience is also evidenced by the fact that ginkgo nuts were found alive after the atomic explosion in Hiroshima, Japan, where even damaged trees began to sprout and grow.
