How Botanical Medicine and Summer Solstice Fit Together?
Midsummer’s day signifies the beginning of Summer. Traditionally, it was a time for harvesting herbs that grew above ground – which means flowers and leaves. The theory was that these herbs were at their peak of vitality with the longest hours of sunshine (photosynthesis). The most famous Midsummer’s plant is St John’s Wort (also known as St Joan’s Wort) which is generally in full flower at this time. Its bright yellow flowers are famous for helping low mood by aiding the retention of serotonin in the brain and gut.
You can read more about this wonderful plant in Jill’s online book on St John’s Wort:https://www.herbs-hands-healing.co.uk/books/online-books/in-a-nutshell-st-john-s-wort-hypericum-perforatum
