Keeping our lungs healthy and airways clear becomes even more important in Winter in order to minimize excess mucous and microbial infections; use these two kitchen herbs on a more regular basis.
Thyme, cook with and add fresh or dried to dishes and even smoothies. Used for bronchitis, asthma, whooping cough and more, the thymol helps clear infection and opens the airways up.
Sage, from your garden or local store as fresh or dried. Use in cooking or herbal teas. Helpful for coughs, colds and chest infections. The essential oils within the leaves will soothe coughs and calm airways.
In our lung herbal tea ‘Breathe & Clear’, we also have plantain leaves. Although not a kitchen herb, it is nevertheless one of the gold star lung herbs. Excellent for lung care and useful for any kind of chest congestion and infection (also hayfever). Plantain (Plantago major or lancelata, not the banana) reduces any irritated mucous membranes; it also helps bring up excess mucous or equally aids a dry cough. Many studies confirm its use with minor to chronic conditions, for children and the elderly and those with infection ranging from bacterial, fungal or viral origin.
