These delicate little plants with their pretty purple veins and yellow centres are just as important a herb today as in the past. They are, as their name suggests invaluable for the eyes and eyesight. Herbalists use them as a tea or tincture for eye infections and for some longer-term sight issues to include eyestrain, eye inflammation and other eye conditions. What is less commonly known is its use for poor memory. ( and used in this way, since the middle ages) The connecting factor between the eyes and memory in modern research seems to be memory loss and retinopathy caused by blood vessel damage in the brain. (Nicholas Culpepper said it ‘straightened the brain’.) I think this plant needs to be taken more seriously and used more frequently as we age, for so many reasons.
This photo was taken in the Derbyshire dales but it is a common sight in the right soils all over the UK and Europe, an important wild herb worth taking care of, as all our National parks do so well.
