Don’t Forget Elderberries are Antiviral
In a 2000 study published in ‘Free Radical Biology & Medicine’ magazine showed that Elderberry anthocyanins protect the inner layer of blood vessels from oxidative stress. The cells absorb the anthocyanins which give them protection from inflammatory stressors. Overall these effects improve circulation and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and other chronic illness.
Flu- Virus – The journal of ‘Alternative & Complementary Medicine’, New York published a trial done during the 1993 major flu outbreak in Panama. The authors found that 90% of subjects who took Elderberry extract were completely cured within 2-3 days, whereas the placebo group achieved the same results in 6 days. Another study B. Roscheck, published July 2009 in ‘Phytochemistry’ suggests that Elderberry extract is comparable to Tamiflu and Amantadine for HINI viral infections. (Elderberry actually prevents the flu virus from propagating by disarming its spikes!)
Caution
Be aware that both Elderberry and Elderflower contain a chemical related to cyanide, so do not use unripe berries, which can lead to nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea.
