The delight of eating hot sweet chestnuts is monumental and indeed most of our experiences are through street vendors selling these piping hot treats. (Rich in B vitamins and good for stomach complaints too.)
They also make a well-known and traditional European ‘flour’, an excellent alternative for those prone to grain allergies. Try mixing with almond and buckwheat flour as a crumble topping!
Sweet Chestnut Leaves
In Turkey and warmer Europe, the leaves are traditionally used as an antimicrobial. These qualities are used for coughs, excess mucous, sore throats, and equally for joint pains and muscle aches. Just brew a strong tea for 10-20 minutes, using two large leaves cut small in one mug of boiling water. These infused leaves will help to tighten the mucus membranes of the lungs and help calm a bad hacking cough. It also makes a good sore throat gargle.
But sadly the leaves are of course not available during the Winter unless you dry the lovely Spring ones in readiness.
