Cheery Oregon Grape
Cheery Oregon Grape – the Liver and Bowel Herb
This is our (wild) hedgerow liver and herbal ‘anti-biotic’ shrub, flowering right now. It is revered all over Europe and especially in Germany for helping skin disorders and (often related) liver issues. Many know it as ‘Oregon Grape’ (Mahonia aquifolium) because of its black, late summer grape-like berries. It is rich in ‘berberines’ a bio-chemical that disarms a wide range of microbes and pathogens as well as tuning and toning the liver and gallbladder. These berberines are bitter compounds that in a 2013 study also showed that they were really useful for ‘metabolic syndrome.’ This syndrome is our 21st century ‘general population’ disorder of a thickened waistline, obesity, high blood pressure, poor cholesterol readings and more. The berberines help this syndrome by improving liver function but also by improving insulin sensitivity. It is one of the reasons why it is in our ‘ColoClear’ Capsules for a sluggish bowel.
