The Fragrance of Late Summer with Basil
Basils familiar flavour and fragrance in pesto and tomato salads is second to none but it also has a cornucopia of healing uses. The fragrance of sunnier days could be described by basils’ unusual scent. Yet it is also a minefield of healing to us!
Anti-biotic Resistance
The Journal of Microbiology published a study stating that Basil inhibited staphylococcus, enterococcus, and pseudomonas, all of which have high resistance to antibiotics. They noted that a 1% solution of essential oil reduced shigella.
Indigestion & Gut Support
As an anti-inflammatory and gut support, it works by blocking COX, just like drug anti-inflammatories do. Of course, it has a million other uses to earn the name ‘Royal,’ e.g for coughs, colds, sore throats, fever, the lowering of blood glucose levels, of triglycerides and cholesterol etc etc!
So named from ‘basilikohn’ the Greek for ‘Royal’ denoting its powerful uses.
My first experience with Basil was as a young herbalist and an octogenarian soldier who had been shot in the stomach during the Second World War. He’d had regular pain bouts several times yearly for decades. I prescribed Basil tea (dried) and this turned out to be his ‘go-to’ for years. This experience and more ensured I put Basil into my digestive formula ‘Lemon & Artichoke.’ [Ask for free samples].
