Meadowsweet, The Acid Balancer (Filipendula ulmaria)
Meadowsweet, The Acid Balancer (Filipendula ulmaria)
The second wild flowering of meadowsweet is out now, adorning and often crowding our slow streams, ditches, and damp pastures. It used to be called ‘Mead-Herb’ as it was commonly brewed with this medieval honey drink. Nowadays it remains an important plant for anyone with acid reflux, acid indigestion, leaky gut, and digestive difficulties. For this reason, I suggest our tea alongside our newly launched GutRest powder blend (to replace and upgrade our old Slippery Elm Plus Powder).
The clever thing about Meadowsweet is its ability to reduce acid and yet if acid levels are excessive then it will decrease levels. In other words, it is an acid balancer. It is classically used to not only reduce acid in the stomach but throughout the body as a whole, e.g. to help joint problems.
It will also protect the lining of the stomach and intestines, using the anti-inflammatory benefit of the salicylates in part. These salicylates will also dampen any pain, working as a weak ‘aspirin.’ (Also try it for gout, fevers, and urinary tract infections.)
(If allergic to Salicylates e.g. aspirin do not use)
