Why I Love Watercress
Why I Love Watercress
I really love the dark green colour and punchy taste. Watercress is from the Nasturtium family (Nasturtium officinale) and has been grown in Britain for hundreds of years, in fact, it was a favourite Victorian street food, considered ‘poor man’s bread.’ It was sold in the street and then eaten as a whole ‘hand-held’ bunch, the same size as bunches are today. Research over 3 years by the John Innes Institute in Norwich was published in the Lancet with very interesting results. Firstly, it is best fresh (not dried). It will mop up free radicals and contains vitamins A, B, C and minerals, Iron, Folic Acid, and more. It is the richest known source of two ‘glucosinolates’ that both have anti-carcinogenic qualities. It is perfect dropped in by the half or full bunch into smoothies. Otherwise include in ‘daily salads’ as a bitter/sour element to tune your digestive juices.
