Summer Skin Tips with Witchazel
Witch hazel water is the distilled leaves and the young twigs of Witch Hazel found in Canada and Eastern U.S. And the ‘Water’ can then be dabbed on sore inflamed skin from burns, sunburns, bites and more.
Witch hazel contains large quantities of tannins which have a drying, astringent effect, causing the tightening of proteins in the skin and across the surface of abrasions. This protective covering helps increase resistance to inflammation and will also heal broken skin more quickly, to include damaged blood vessels beneath the skin surface.
Witch hazel water used to be and for some still is, one of the ‘basics’ in a first aid kit, whilst the Victorian and Edwardian women used it daily to tighten their skin and reduce puffy eyes as a part of their beauty regime. I still use it as regular cleansing water on my face (as advised by my Grandmother some 50 years ago). It’s certainly a relief with its cooling, the soothing effect felt within seconds.
