Mental Wellbeing with Lavender and St John’s Wort

Two pretty plants that support the mind and mental wellbeing flowered long ago now but their benefits can be available at any time.
I’m talking about st john’s wort and lavender which both visually bring joy and perhaps fond memories. St john’s wort flowers have a capability of treating a range of nerve and brain-related disorders such as insomnia, early morning waking, oversleeping, nervous excitement, tension headaches, impaired memory and not least depression and S.A.D.
Lavender is a ‘nootropic’ (Greek for bending the mind) and like st john’s wort it’s the flowers that are used. The theory that lavender can calm yet gently enliven the mind and soothe the spirits is based on its biochemistry affecting a brain chemical which reduces nerve cell activity (involved in anxiety). Of course, its fragrant essential oil is simply delightful and can be used on pillows or simply as a scent.
Caution for St John’s Wort
Anybody on medication needs to research whether they can take St John’s Wort. For instance, it mustn’t be placed with S.S.R.I meds or ‘The Pill’. (First dose use should be done at home with carefully observed results before continuing).
