Walking and Plant Watching
We all do more walking as a result of our lockdowns, don’t we? Have you noticed more plants and nature in general as you stroll along?
Researchers at the University of Exeter have found that walking is significantly beneficial to mental health problems, particularly in the area of addiction where they established that as little as five or ten minutes walking a day can cut addictive cravings in people trying to give up smoking. The British Heart Foundation has said that walking is a good form of cardiovascular exercise it can help protect against heart disease. It is also an effective way of strengthening bones and is therefore recommended for Osteoporosis sufferers or people wishing to prevent the onset of muscle and bone degenerative conditions. For people wishing to lose weight, it is also worth remembering that when walking 3 miles the average person can burn 100 calories per mile.
The key to making walking as beneficial as possible is your technique. Walk at a good pace, but always to suit your personal health.
Most importantly, have fun, breath deeply, enjoy and keep noticing those trees and plants!
