Why Fennel is our Favourite
Why Fennel is our Favourite
Such a sweetly uplifting and fragrant plant isn’t it. And that can be the fresh foliage in a salad, the seeds in cooking or the bulbs steamed or roasted. Just yummy. The Romans believed it made them strong and the Greeks used it as an appetite suppressant.
It contains vitamin C and anethole, a volatile oil rich in anti-inflammatory components. It’s extremely good for digestion, bloating and loss of appetite!
For Women
As an ‘emmenagogue’ it helps ease and regulate menstruation by properly regulating hormonal action and is specifically used to reduce the effects of pre-menstrual tension (P.M.T.) and often within a formula to include Agnus castus. Equally, it is good for menopausal women. However consumed in large quantities it may/can overly increase oestrogen levels too high, so for those already experiencing excessive oestrogen levels (oestrogen dominance), a little for flavouring is fine, but not more. [For those with oestrogen sensitive conditions such as breast and ovarian cancer for sure avoid].
To Help our Lungs
It’s not often used for this but it’s a very good respiratory herb so remember this when autumn chills advance on our lungs. The fennel seeds break up phlegm and promote the loosening of toxins and unwanted buildups in the throat and nasal passages.
