Sphagnum Moss our Native Antimicrobial
Sphagnum moss has been used for centuries to combat bacterial, viral and fungal infections. Most famously it was used in vast quantities in WW1 as bandage material for several reasons. It was cheaper, cooler, softer and more efficient than cotton (soaking up escaping fluids) whilst dually providing antisepsis, anti-infection compounds.
Overall it is a complex plant, having its very own ecosystem where minute fungi and parasites live within it and which no doubt are part of its antimicrobial capabilities.
Never use the moss directly on a wound, always wrap in muslin first for comfort.
It is plentiful in the winter, flourishing in damp and standing water.
